Summary:

Writing effectively is a key competency in government.  It is often considered a reflection of your skill set and can result in career advancement and placement opportunities.  This one-day intensive boot camp covers all aspects of writing successfully while allowing you to excel when writing inside government.  The day consists of the following sessions:

1. Art of Writing Well

An effective writing style is key to a successful public sector career.  At some career stage, public servants are required produce well-written documents.  This module focuses on the components essential to writing well.  It also covers style and strategies.

2.  Plain Language Writing Skills

There is a strong movement today for plain language writing -- particularly as part of public sector accountability.  It's not enough to be an expert in your field if you are unable to communicate your expertise to others.  This module covers how to achieve plain language writing in your letters, emails, reports, briefing notes and more.  It teaches the underlying techniques required to elevate your writing communication in government.

3.  Writing Excellent Government Products

Clear, concise and effective writing of government products is a critical skill in government -- whether you are an Administrative Assistant, Analyst, Manager or Director.  This session will focus on the mechanics of writing with impact, including applying these skills to key government documents such as emails, correspondence, memoranda, briefing/issue notes, reports and proposals.

4.  Writing Effectively for Your Senior Management 

In today's environment, your senior executives have little time to absorb key information and make decisions to guide their organizations. It is critical to understand what these leaders need and how to write material they can read and act on quickly. This last module covers the essentials of how to present information effectively in writing for senior executives. Participants will learn tips for writing clearly and apply these tips to briefing notes, decks and other documents for  senior management and/or Ministers.

Instructor:

The instructor is a highly-experienced trainer who works extensively with Canada’s federal, provincial and municipal governments.  He taught in the public sector for over 20 years and coaches public sector organizations while serving in a leadership position in a Public Administration postgraduate program.
